Millburn Township owes much of its distinct character to Stewart Hartshorn, who in 1877 founded and planned the community he named Short Hills. A lover of nature, he followed the natural terrain and often adjusted the roads to avoid cutting down trees.

Many of the original Hartshorn houses, built of wood and blue traprock are still part of this lovely community.

Today, with a diverse population of approximately 20,000 residents and conveniently located less than 20 miles from Manhattan, Millburn and Short Hills remain an ideal place in which to live and work. The township has become very popular with young professionals moving out of Manhattan, thanks to the convenient NJ Transit Mid-town Direct train service to Penn Station.

Two downtown areas, situated around the two ends of Millburn Avenue, offer residents the perfect mix of shopping and restaurants. The Mall at Short Hills provides an upscale shopping experience. Theater lovers will find top-notch quality productions for the entire family at the Paper Mill Playhouse.

Millburn and Short Hills share one of the best school systems in the state. The five elementary schools (grades K-5) consistently rank among the highest in the annual State Report Card. Millburn Middle School (grades 6-8) and Millburn High School also boast excellent ratings. The area also is home to three private schools: Far Brook School (PreK-8), the Pingry School's lower school (K-6) and St. Rose of Lima School (PreK-8).

Recreational opportunities are extensive in Millburn Township. With part of the South Mountain Reservation in the town's boundary, miles of beautiful hiking and jogging trails are easily accessible. The area also boasts numerous scenic parks and playgrounds such as Old Short Hill Park, Taylor Park and Gero Park.
