 |
The historic community of New Providence was first settled by a
Puritan colony that came to the area in 1720. The Presbyterian
Church was the center of life in this small community and in
1759 the crowded church balcony collapsed. It was considered a
miracle no one was seriously injured and the event was soon
referred to as a divine act of "providence" leading the town to
be called New Providence.
Today, with a diverse population of about 12,000 residents and
conveniently located 28 miles from New York City, New Providence
remains an ideal place to live and work. Although mostly a
residential community made up of single -family homes,
condominiums and garden apartments, New Providence is also home
to a number of corporate businesses with worldwide reputations
in their field.
Commuting is made simple with access to two train stations and
well as close proximity to major highways.
Downtown New Providence offers its residents a unique mix of
charming shops, services and restaurants. The Village Square
Shopping Center is soon to be re-developed with state-of-the-art
stores and the nearby upscale Mall at Short Hills offers a variety
of department and specialty shops.
New Providence is highly-regarded for its excellent school
system. There are two grammar schools for kindergarteners
through sixth graders, and the New Providence Middle School
is for grades 7-8. New Providence High school has approximately
550 students enrolled and was recently ranked among the top 20
high schools in New Jersey by New Jersey Monthly Magazine. New
Providence is also home to Our Lady of Peace School, a parochial
elementary school.
Recreational opportunities are abundant in New Providence, and
the town provides a wide variety of programs for children and
adults. The New Providence Community Pool offers residents a
beautiful place to socialize and swim in the summer months. In
addition to winter ice skating at Oakwood Park, residents can
enjoy the use of three playgrounds, eight ball fields and eight
public tennis courts.
