The city of Summit has a rich and distinguished history. As a strategic site during the Revolutionary War, George Washington and his generals spent time here during 1780 and 1781. Later, when train service was established in 1837, the town became a prestigious summer resort for wealthy New Yorkers looking for fresh air and unspoiled beauty.

Today, with a diverse population of more than 22,000 residents and conveniently located just 22 miles from Manhattan, Summit remains an ideal community in which to live and work.

Downtown Summit offers its residents a unique mix of delightful shops, services and restaurants. The popular upscale Mall at Short Hills, with a variety of department and specialty stores, is nearby.

Summit is serviced by NJ Transit's Mid-town direct train service providing commuters with a quick route to New York City.

The Summit Public School system is consistently highly rated for its performance and test scores. Two newly opened state-of-the-art Primary Centers offer a pre-school and kindergarten. Five elementary schools with grades 1 - 5 offer small class sizes. The Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School is open to grades 6 - 8. With approximately 1,000 students, ninety- two percent of Summit High School graduates go on to higher education. Summit is also home to three private schools - Oak Knoll School of the Holy Child, Kent Place School and Oratory Prepatory School.

Recreational opportunities are abundant in Summit. The newly renovated Summit Community Pool offers residents the latest in aquatic facilities. Public tennis courts, soccer fields, baseball fields, numerous artificial turf fields, jogging paths as well as basketball courts are all available for residents to enjoy.
